ePHI
Electronic protected health information, the patient data HIPAA requires you to safeguard.
What Is ePHI?
ePHI stands for electronic protected health information. It is any protected health information that is created, received, stored, or transmitted in electronic form, such as patient records in an EHR, lab results, billing data, or health details in an email. Under HIPAA, organizations that handle ePHI are legally required to safeguard it.
How It Works
Protected health information (PHI) is any information that can identify a patient and relates to their health, care, or payment for care. When that information exists in electronic form, it becomes ePHI and falls under HIPAA’s Security Rule, which sets specific requirements for protecting it.
ePHI can live in many places: electronic health record systems, patient portals, email, cloud storage, laptops, phones, and backup systems. Anywhere patient data is stored or moves electronically, that data is ePHI and must be protected. This includes obvious identifiers like names and Social Security numbers, but also things like medical record numbers, dates, and any health detail tied to an individual.
HIPAA’s Security Rule requires organizations to protect ePHI through safeguards such as encryption, access controls, audit logging, and secure backups. Because ePHI moves and is stored across so many systems, protecting it means securing every place it lives, not just the main record system.
Why It Matters
ePHI is exactly what attackers target and what regulators protect, which makes safeguarding it the core of HIPAA compliance. A breach of ePHI can trigger notification requirements, significant penalties, and lost patient trust. Knowing what counts as ePHI and everywhere it lives in your organization is the essential first step to protecting it and meeting your HIPAA obligations.
