What Is Encryption?
Encryption is the process of converting readable data into a scrambled, coded form so that only someone with the correct key can unlock and read it. If encrypted data is stolen, intercepted, or accessed without authorization, it remains unreadable and useless to the attacker. This makes encryption one of the most fundamental protections for sensitive information.
How It Works
Encryption uses mathematical algorithms to transform readable information, called plaintext, into scrambled code, called ciphertext. Only someone with the correct decryption key can reverse the process and read the original data. Without the key, the encrypted data is meaningless.
Encryption protects data in two key states. Encryption at rest protects data while it is stored, on a laptop, server, or in the cloud, so that a lost or stolen device does not expose its contents. Encryption in transit protects data while it moves between locations, such as when you send an email or access a website, so it cannot be intercepted and read along the way.
Strong encryption is a requirement in many regulations. Under HIPAA, for example, properly encrypted data that is lost or stolen may not even count as a reportable breach, because the information stays protected. This is why encryption is considered a baseline safeguard rather than an optional extra.
Why It Matters
Encryption is one of the most effective and important protections available, because it keeps data safe even when other defenses fail. A stolen laptop, an intercepted email, or a breached database causes far less harm if the data inside is encrypted. For organizations handling sensitive information, encrypting data both at rest and in transit is essential to protecting patients, clients, and the organization itself.
