Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

MFA adds a second layer of proof beyond your password. Here is how it works and why it is the single best defense against account takeover.

What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security method that requires two or more forms of verification to access an account, rather than a password alone. It combines something you know, like a password, with something you have or are, such as a phone code or fingerprint.

How It Works

MFA works by adding an extra checkpoint to the login process. After entering your password, you must provide a second factor to prove your identity. That factor typically falls into one of three categories: something you know (a password or PIN), something you have (a phone, app code, or hardware key), or something you are (a fingerprint or face scan).

The most common setup pairs a password with a one-time code from an authenticator app or a hardware security key. Even if an attacker steals your password through phishing or a data breach, they cannot log in without also possessing your second factor. This simple extra step blocks the overwhelming majority of automated and credential-based attacks.

Why It Matters

Passwords alone are no longer enough. Billions of stolen credentials circulate on the dark web, and attackers routinely use them to break into accounts. MFA neutralizes this threat by making a stolen password insufficient on its own, which is why it is considered one of the most effective security controls available.

For small clinics, nonprofits, and firms, MFA delivers enterprise-grade protection at little to no cost. Many compliance frameworks, including HIPAA and SOC 2, now expect or require it. Enabling MFA across your email, financial, and data systems is one of the highest-impact security steps any organization can take.
