Identity and Access Management (IAM)

IAM is how you make sure the right people have the right access, and no one else. It combines verifying who someone is with controlling what they are allowed to reach, keeping your systems and data secure.

What Is Identity and Access Management (IAM)

Identity and access management (IAM) is the framework of policies and technologies that ensures the right individuals have the appropriate access to an organization’s systems and data, and that everyone else is kept out. IAM combines verifying a user’s identity with controlling what that user is allowed to do, forming a core part of any organization’s security.

How It Works

IAM brings together two connected functions. The first is authentication, which confirms that users are who they say they are, typically through passwords combined with multi-factor authentication. The second is authorization, which determines what each verified user is allowed to access and do, based on their role.

A well-run IAM approach follows the principle of least privilege, giving each person only the access their role genuinely requires and nothing more. It also manages the full lifecycle of access: granting it when someone joins, adjusting it when their role changes, and removing it promptly when they leave. This lifecycle management is what prevents the lingering, forgotten access that attackers exploit.

Modern IAM often includes tools like single sign-on, which lets users access multiple systems with one secure login, and centralized controls that give administrators a clear view of who can access what. For a small organization, IAM does not have to be complex, but the underlying discipline of verifying identity and controlling access is essential.

Why It Matters

IAM matters because compromised or excessive access is behind a large share of breaches. When too many people can reach sensitive data, or when a single account is compromised, the damage can be severe. Strong identity and access management limits that exposure, ensures only authorized people reach your data, supports compliance requirements, and means a single stolen login cannot unlock your entire organization.
