Endpoint
Every laptop, phone, tablet, and server in your organization is an endpoint. And every one of them is a potential entry point for an attacker, which is why securing endpoints is so important.
What Is an Endpoint?
An endpoint is any device that connects to a network, including laptops, desktops, smartphones, tablets, and servers. Each endpoint is a point where a user accesses your systems and data, which also makes it a potential entry point for attackers. Because of this, securing endpoints is one of the foundations of good cybersecurity.
How It Works
Think of your network as a building and each endpoint as a door into it. Every device that connects, whether a staff laptop, a phone checking email, or a server running an application, is a way in. The more devices you have, the more doors an attacker could try.
Endpoints are attractive targets because they are where users work and where data lives or passes through. An attacker who compromises a single endpoint, often through phishing or malware, can use it as a foothold to move deeper into your network and reach more valuable systems.
This is why endpoint security matters so much. Protecting each device with tools like endpoint detection and response, encryption, and multi-factor authentication turns those doors from vulnerabilities into defended entry points. On a well-secured network, compromising one endpoint does not hand an attacker the keys to everything.
Why It Matters
Endpoints are among the most common ways attackers get into an organization, because there are so many of them and they are where users, and human error, live. Every unprotected or forgotten device is a risk. Securing and monitoring every endpoint, and knowing exactly which devices connect to your network, is essential to closing the gaps attackers look for.
