Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR)

Security software that watches devices in real time and stops threats antivirus misses.

What Is Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR)?

Endpoint detection and response (EDR) is a security technology that continuously monitors devices such as laptops, servers, and workstations for signs of malicious activity, then responds automatically to contain threats. Unlike traditional antivirus, which mainly recognizes known threats, EDR watches for suspicious behavior in real time, allowing it to catch modern attacks that older tools miss.

How It Works

EDR software runs on each endpoint and constantly monitors what is happening on the device: the processes running, the files being accessed, and the network connections being made. Rather than only checking files against a list of known threats, it looks for suspicious patterns of behavior that suggest an attack is underway.

When EDR detects something dangerous, it can respond automatically and immediately. It can isolate the affected device from the network to stop an attack from spreading, kill a malicious process, and alert security teams so they can investigate. This real-time detection and response is what the name describes.

This behavior-based approach is why EDR is so much more effective than traditional antivirus against modern threats. Today’s ransomware and fileless attacks are specifically designed to evade signature-based antivirus, but they still behave in suspicious ways that EDR can detect. This makes EDR the current standard for endpoint protection.

Why It Matters

EDR matters because traditional antivirus is no longer enough to stop modern attacks. Ransomware and advanced threats routinely slip past signature-based tools, but EDR catches them by watching for malicious behavior and responding before the damage spreads. Cyber insurers increasingly require it, and it is one of the most important protections an organization can deploy on its devices.
