Data Breach

Any incident where sensitive information is accessed, stolen, or exposed without authorization.

What Is a Data Breach?

A data breach is any incident in which sensitive, protected, or confidential information is accessed, stolen, or exposed without authorization. This can include personal data, financial records, health information, or business secrets. Breaches happen through cyberattacks like ransomware and phishing, but also through lost devices, misconfigured systems, and human error.

How It Works

Data breaches occur in many ways, but most follow a few common paths. An attacker may trick an employee through phishing and steal login credentials. Ransomware may encrypt and exfiltrate data. A misconfigured cloud folder may leave files publicly accessible. Or a laptop holding sensitive information may simply be lost or stolen.

However it happens, the result is that data crosses from a protected state into an exposed one. Depending on what was exposed, the consequences range from financial fraud and identity theft to regulatory penalties and lasting damage to trust.

Breaches often take a long time to discover, sometimes months, during which attackers may quietly access data or prepare further attacks. This is why early detection matters so much. And for regulated data like health information, a breach triggers specific legal obligations, including notifying affected individuals and, in many cases, the government.

Why It Matters

Data breaches are costly, disruptive, and increasingly common. Beyond the immediate financial damage, they can bring regulatory fines, legal liability, and a loss of customer or patient trust that is hard to rebuild. For organizations handling sensitive data, preventing breaches through strong security, and being prepared to respond quickly when one occurs, is essential to protecting both the people they serve and the organization itself.
