What Is the Dark Web?

The dark web is a hidden portion of the internet that cannot be reached through ordinary browsers or search engines and requires special software to access. While it has some legitimate uses, it is widely known as a marketplace where criminals buy and sell stolen data, such as breached passwords, financial records, and personal information, along with hacking tools and services.

How It Works

The internet has layers. The surface web is what you reach through normal browsers and search engines. Beneath it, the deep web includes private, unindexed content like your online banking or email behind a login. The dark web is a small, deliberately hidden part of the deep web that requires special anonymizing software to access, which conceals the identities of its users.

That anonymity is what makes it attractive to criminals. On dark web marketplaces, stolen data from breaches is bought and sold in bulk. A password exposed in one company’s breach, a batch of stolen medical records, or a set of financial details can all be traded to other criminals who use them for fraud, identity theft, and further attacks.

For an organization, the dark web is where the consequences of a breach often play out. Once your data is stolen, it can be sold and resold to many different criminals, extending the damage long after the original incident.

Why It Matters

The dark web matters because it is where stolen credentials and data are monetized, fueling attacks like credential stuffing, fraud, and identity theft. If your organization’s data appears there, it signals a breach and ongoing risk. Dark web monitoring services can alert you when your credentials or data show up for sale, giving you a chance to respond, though prevention through strong security remains the best defense.
