What is Co-Managed IT?

Co-managed IT is a partnership model in which an organization’s internal IT staff work alongside an external managed service provider, sharing responsibilities rather than handing them over entirely. The provider supplements the internal team with specialized expertise, enterprise-grade tools, and around-the-clock coverage, while internal staff retain their hands-on role and institutional knowledge.

How It Works

In a co-managed arrangement, responsibilities are divided based on what each side does best. Your internal IT person or team handles the day-to-day needs, user support, and the deep knowledge of your specific environment. The external provider takes on the areas that are hard for one person or a small team to cover alone.

Typically, the provider handles 24/7 monitoring, cybersecurity, patching, backup management, and specialized projects, while also giving your internal staff access to enterprise tools and a broader bench of expertise. The exact split is flexible and defined by what your organization needs.

This model solves a common problem: the single point of failure. A lone internal IT person cannot be available around the clock, cannot be expert in everything, and cannot work while on vacation or out sick. Co-managed IT relieves that pressure without giving up the benefits of having someone in-house.
