What is Backup and Disaster Recovery (BDR)?

Backup and disaster recovery (BDR) is the combined practice of regularly copying your data and maintaining the ability to restore your systems and operations quickly after a disruption. Backup is the copy of your data; disaster recovery is the plan and capability to get running again after a failure, cyberattack, or disaster.

How It Works

BDR brings together two related but distinct functions. Backup means creating and storing copies of your data so it can be recovered if the original is lost, often following the 3-2-1 rule of three copies on two media types with one offsite. Disaster recovery is the broader plan for restoring not just data but full operations, including systems, applications, and access, within a defined timeframe.

The two are measured by two key targets. Recovery time objective, or RTO, is how quickly you need to be back up and running. Recovery point objective, or RPO, is how much recent data you can afford to lose. Together they shape how a BDR solution is designed.

A strong BDR approach is tested regularly, because a backup that has never been restored may not actually work, and a recovery plan that has never been rehearsed often fails under real pressure.

Why It Matters

Data loss and downtime can be catastrophic for a small organization. Ransomware, hardware failure, human error, and natural disasters can all take systems offline. BDR is what turns a potential business-ending event into a recoverable one. For clinics and nonprofits especially, it protects both continuity of operations and the sensitive data people depend on.
