DDoS Attack

An attack that floods a website or network with traffic to knock it offline.

What Is a DDoS Attack?

A DDoS attack, short for distributed denial-of-service, is a cyberattack that floods a website, server, or network with an overwhelming amount of traffic until it can no longer function. Unlike attacks that steal data, a DDoS attack aims to disrupt operations by taking systems offline, making them unavailable to legitimate users.

How It Works

A DDoS attack works by directing far more traffic at a target than it can handle. To generate that volume, attackers typically use a botnet, a network of many infected devices under their control. Each device sends requests to the target at once, and the combined flood overwhelms the system’s capacity.

The word “distributed” is key. Because the traffic comes from many different devices around the world simultaneously, it is far harder to block than an attack from a single source. The target cannot simply shut out one address; the requests are coming from everywhere.

When the system is overwhelmed, it slows to a crawl or crashes entirely, and legitimate users, your customers, patients, or staff, cannot reach it. Attackers use DDoS attacks to disrupt operations, damage reputation, or sometimes as a distraction while they carry out another attack elsewhere.

Why It Matters

A DDoS attack can take your website, patient portal, or online services offline, causing lost revenue, disrupted operations, and frustrated users. For organizations that depend on their online presence, even a short outage is costly. Defending against DDoS attacks involves specialized protection that can absorb or filter malicious traffic, along with monitoring that detects and responds to an attack quickly before the damage grows.
