Insider Threat
A security risk that comes from someone inside your organization, whether malicious or accidental.
What Is an Insider Threat
An insider threat is a security risk that originates from within an organization, from someone with legitimate access to its systems and data, such as an employee, contractor, or partner. Insider threats can be malicious, where a person deliberately misuses their access, or accidental, where someone unintentionally causes harm through a mistake. Because insiders already have access, these threats can be especially damaging.
How It Works
Insider threats fall into a few categories. A malicious insider deliberately abuses their access to steal data, cause damage, or benefit themselves, perhaps a disgruntled employee or someone leaving for a competitor. A negligent insider causes harm unintentionally, such as by falling for a phishing email, mishandling sensitive data, or misconfiguring a system. And a compromised insider is a legitimate user whose account has been taken over by an attacker, who then acts under the cover of a trusted identity.
What makes insider threats particularly dangerous is that the person already has authorized access, so their activity may not trigger the defenses designed to keep outsiders out. A trusted employee downloading files or accessing records may look like normal behavior until the damage is done.
Defending against insider threats relies on the same fundamentals that protect against outside attackers: giving people only the access their role requires, monitoring for unusual activity, and promptly removing access when someone leaves. Strong access management and awareness training address both the malicious and the accidental sides of the risk.
Why It Matters
Insider threats are a significant and often overlooked source of breaches, because organizations naturally focus on external attackers while trusting those inside. Yet a departing employee with lingering access, a staff member who clicks a phishing link, or a compromised account can all cause serious harm. Managing insider risk through least-privilege access, monitoring, and prompt offboarding is an essential part of a complete security program.
